Overthinking Your Writing
So you’ve finally taken the plunge and started writing articles online. It’s something that you’ve wanted to do for a long time but were afraid to get your feet wet. Well, I’ve gotten some great advice from seasoned writers for whom I have a great deal of respect. They all say the same thing: Write what you know and the words will come easy, write what you’re passionate about and the words will come easy, when writing what you don’t know… research the topic. These writers all suggest starting out with writing what you know.
That’s all well and good until you sit in front of your computer with your fingers perched on the keyboard and suddenly you realize that you don’t know anything. Where did all those ideas go? What happened to that how-to article about transplanting African violets? Or replacing a water faucet? Or whatever? Your mind is blank. Your fingers are frozen, then you type the first word of a sentence, then you backspace to get rid of it and try again...and again.
Don’t overthink! Simply pretend that you are verbally explaining your expertise to another person. If it’s something that you are passionate about, you would probably be talking your head off. Okay, if pretending to verbalize isn’t working for you then actually verbalize. Yes, I mean talk to yourself or dictate to yourself. Hopefully you won’t be too much of a disturbance to others nearby.
